As an emergency doctor, I have encountered many sick exotic species including rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, and even snakes. A native of Brasília, Brazil, Dr. Proença is the founder and CEO of VETAHEAD! Dr. Proença has always been passionate about veterinary medicine. She is the first South American to become a Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine (DACZM), with an emphasis on zoological companion animals (a.k.a. exotics). In Brazil, she owned her own private practice exclusive to zoological companion animals.

Dr. Proença did her Zoological Medicine residency at the University of Georgia, where she developed a special interest for ZooMed endoscopy and minimally invasive techniques, collaborating to produce several publications including novel techniques in endosurgery. She is the co-editor of the 2015 Exotic Endoscopy issue of Veterinary Clinics of North America. Dr. Proença has been actively participating in the zoological medicine community, teaching many national and international lectures, courses, masterclasses and wet labs, including endoscopy courses.

Dr. Pardo is originally from Chile, where she obtained her bachelor’s in veterinary sciences and Veterinary Doctor degree at Universidad Mayor, in 2009. She completed two, one-year emergency and critical care internships. At the University of Georgia in 2013, where she worked with the zoological medicine department and published a novel central line placement technique in tortoises. Her second emergency and critical care internship was at the University of Florida in 2014, where she was able to work closely with the hemodialysis unit.

She then went on to pursue her emergency and critical care residency at Cornell University, where she published 2 articles regarding toxicology and a novel percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy technique in dogs. In 2018, she became the first female board-certified emergency and critical care specialist of Latin America. She started a critical care department in a private practice in Long Island and is currently working for the Veterinary Emergency Group in New York.

This online course provides an intensive lecture on a wide array of medicine and emergency critical care of zoomed (exotic) species, including mammals (rabbits, rodents, ferrets, hedgehogs, sugar gliders), birds (with focus on Psittacines) and reptiles (chelonians, snakes and lizards).

It covers aspects of how to set up your practice, medical math, triage, clinical skills, sedation and analgesia, CPR guidelines, assessment and treatment of dehydration and hypovolemia, assessment and treatment of hypotension, common emergencial presentations of zoomed (exotic) species, among other important topics.

The course is aimed at veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals (technician, assistant, nurse), as well as respective students with a keen interest in emergency and critical care of zoomed (exotic) species.

DACZM Dr. Proença and DACVECC Dr. Pardo introduce themselves and offer an overview of the course, which species will be covered, and course structure.

Dr. Proença and Dr. Pardo teach the principles of incorporating zoomed (exotic) species it into your practice, including necessary equipment and hospital setup, crash cart organization, recommended medical literature, standard of care, and charge structure.

Dr. Proença and Dr. Pardo teach how to calculate and administer CRIs, how to dilute drugs properly, and how to use units base syringes and small gauge needles.

Dr. Proença and Dr. Pardo teach how to properly triage your patients, handling and restraint techniques, clinical skills, initial stabilization, how to recognize shock, and sedation and anesthesia.

Dr. Pardo teaches basic and advanced life support, and post cardiac arrest care.

Dr. Pardo teaches how to assess dehydration and hypovolemia, the indications and types of fluids (cristalloids, colloids), as well as dosing and routes of administration. The indications for the use of blood products, as well as storage, cross-matching, blood typing, administration and monitoring, and xeno and autotransfusions are also covered. Treatment of fluid overload and how to make custom fluids are covered as well.

Dr. Pardo teaches how to assess and treat hypotension, including physiological aspects, causes, blood pressure techniques and equipment.

Dr. Pardo teaches about acid-base derangements, hypoglicemia and hyperglimecia, and electrolyte derangements.
