January 2022 newsletter
Hi there! I’m back with some news from the veterinary world.
We recently shared on our Instagram page a paper on the use of blood sampled from the gingival vein of guinea pigs, and it was a big hit! The paper shows that the gingival vein is a good source of blood for hematologic analysis, but not for blood culture. The paper has photos showing the location and the technique for sampling blood!
If you’re curious about the gingival vein, you will be happy to know that it can also be used for hamsters! This paper shows that it is a minimally invasive and traumatic spot for blood sampling for Syrian golden hamsters (and yes, there are also photos showing the location and technique!).
Lastly, we have a brand new paper on the use of radiographs for the diagnostics of macrodontia in guinea pigs. They describe the alterations that characterize this condition, and found that 89% of all guinea pigs in their retrospective study had at least one macrodont. This is definitely something to look out for in your guinea pig patients with dental disease!
See you next month!
Sincerely,
Laila Proença
