May 2022 newsletter
Hi there! I am back with news from the veterinary world.
First, here’s a case report of granulomatous encephalitis in guinea pig secondary to Encephalitozoon cuniculi. CT-scans showed hypodense lesions in the right temporal lobe, which enlarged over time. A histopathological examination of brain tissue revealed focal granulomatous encephalitis, and PCR allowed the detection of E. cuniculi DNA.
Second, we have a paper on the establishment of stress behaviors in response to manual handling in cockatiels. The researchers evaluated the behavior of 26 juvenile cockatiels with quantitative ethograms and measurements of plasma corticosterone before and after manual restraint. Their results showed that plasma corticosterone levels significantly increased after restraint, but further study into specific behaviors of significance is needed.
Lastly, we have a paper on CT findings of dental disease in rabbits. Their results showed that common findings included premolar or molar tooth curvature in transverse and sagittal planes, apical elongation of premolar or molar teeth, sharp dental points, deformation of the mandibular canal, and periodontal ligament space widening. They also found that age was associated with increasing dental disease grade and malocclusion stage.
On VETAHEAD related news, we have new courses on the works! This month we will be recording the lessons for our emergency of zoomed (exotic) animals course and for our hystrichomorph (guinea pigs and chinchillas) course! 🎉🎉🎉 Our emergency course will be taught by Dr. Mariana Pardo and I, while the hystrichomorph course will be taught by Dr. Miranda Sadar. Are you excited? I sure am. If you want to get sneak peeks and more info on when the courses launch, make sure to follow us on social media!
Talk to you soon!
Sincerely,
Laila Proença
