November 2021 newsletter
Hi there! I’m back with news from the veterinary world.
First, a very recent paper on the use of mirtazapine in rabbits. The results showed that the dosage of 3 mg/kg PO q 24h increased fecal output! It did not, however, increase food intake, so monitoring the patient’s weight is a must.
Another very recent paper, this time a review on 2,249 cases looking for clinical and pathological findings in rabbits with cardiovascular disease. They found a prevalence of 2.6% of cardiovascular disease, with right-sided, left-sided, and biventricular congestive heart failure occurring equally.
On a slightly older paper, but still very very relevant, we have the influence of rabbits’ diet on their calcium metabolism, tissue calcification, and urinary sludge. The results of this experiment showed that dietary calcium levels were not an impactful contributor to urolithiasis or tissue calcification. They did find that diets with lower calcium levels reduced the degree of urinary sludge formation.
That’s it for this month! Thank you for being with me on this journey.
See you next month!
Sincerely,
Laila Proença
